How do I download data from a datalogger?

Connect the TMD Adapter to your computer with a USB-C cable, touch the top of the datalogger (the metal cap) to the adapter, and use the free Lolly Software. In the field you can also use the TOMST Lolly for Android app on your phone - see the Software page.

Is there a mobile app?

Yes - TOMST Lolly for Android connects to your dataloggers through the TMD Adapter over USB-C, so you can configure devices and download data directly in the field without a laptop. It is available on Google Play; the link and details are on the Software page.

Is there an iPhone version?

Not at the moment, and it comes down to how iOS works rather than a preference. Reading a datalogger needs direct low-level communication with the TMD Adapter, and iOS does not let apps talk to accessories that way. Supporting iPhone would mean redesigning the adapter itself to meet Apple's hardware program - which would make it more expensive and add parts that can fail, working against the simplicity and reliability the whole system is built for. For fieldwork the practical answer is a rugged Android phone: inexpensive, hard-wearing, and TOMST Lolly for Android does everything you need on site.

Do I need any special equipment?

No. Every TOMST datalogger is completely autonomous - it measures on its own from the day it ships. You only need one TMD Adapter and the free Lolly Software to configure devices and download data.

How long does the battery last? Can I replace it?

More than 10 years in the recommended Basic (15-minute) mode - nothing to charge, nothing to switch on. The number is what our installed devices have shown us, and they keep running past it: dataloggers installed over 12 years ago are still recording, many devices have passed 14 years, and a TMS Standard typically still has a large battery reserve after 15. The cell itself is guaranteed by the battery manufacturer, whose chemistry is rated for 10 years on every device and 20 years on the TMS Extreme. Worth knowing that the units proving this are older hardware: we improve the devices continuously without announcing it, while keeping measurements comparable across generations. The battery is sealed in and not replaceable - that sealed body is what keeps the device watertight in the field. How long you get depends on the mode you set in Lolly and on the temperatures the device sees: see how long a datalogger lasts.

My device is damaged or shows odd data. What should I do?

Email us first - do not open the device. We extract data from damaged dataloggers free of charge; repairs may be charged depending on the type of damage.

I can't download data from my datalogger.

Make sure you have the latest Lolly version: in Lolly open Options and select "Check for update". Lolly updates itself and the TMD Adapter firmware automatically, and the datalogger firmware updates when connected.

Does Lolly run on macOS?

Lolly is a Windows application. On a Mac it runs in a Windows virtual machine (e.g. Parallels). For quick work in the field, TOMST Lolly for Android is an alternative.

Is there a wireless version?

No - TOMST dataloggers are deliberately offline. No radio means years of battery life, no subscriptions, and no infrastructure to maintain. Data is collected with the TMD Adapter during site visits.

How do I convert raw soil moisture values to volumetric soil moisture?

Use the Calibration function in Lolly: pick a soil type (or define your own) and the raw signal (~500-3600) is converted to volumetric soil moisture in vol%. Details are in the TMS Calibration Handbook on the Support page; for larger analyses we recommend the myClim R package.

How do I convert Point Dendrometer readings to micrometers?

Multiply the raw digital values by the proportionality constant 8 890 / (34 000 - 1 279) ≈ 0.272 µm per unit.

How do I place an order?

Use the quotation request form or email us directly - we reply with a quotation including shipping for your country. We do not require prepayment; payment terms are agreed to fit your needs.

How fast is delivery?

Smaller orders (up to about 10 devices) are usually dispatched within 1-2 days; for larger orders we recommend ordering in advance. We ship with FedEx, so the package typically arrives within days of dispatch.

How do I share files with TOMST?

Through the file page: one page for files in both directions, without e-mail size limits. To send us something, choose the file there; it is encrypted the moment it arrives, with a code that only you see, and nobody at TOMST can open it until you pass that code on (by phone, or in a message of its own). When we have a file for you, or are expecting one from you, we send you a link and a code; the link shows what is waiting and until when, and the code opens it. Files are up to 500 MB each, and how long a file stays is set when it is put up.

Why is there no cookie consent banner?

Because we don't use the cookies a banner is for. We don't track you, and the site loads nothing from any third party - so there is no advertising or tracking to consent to. The only measurement we do is properly anonymised: our own server counts the requests it receives, with your IP address truncated before anything is written down - no cookie, no identifier, and no way to follow anyone from one visit to the next. Consent applies to storing or reading information on your device, and none of that measurement touches your device. All we store are small functional cookies that remember which regional site and currency to show you, based on an approximate, country-level guess from your IP address. That guess lives in a cookie on your own device; on our side it appears only in the anonymous counts, and we build no profile from it. Consent banners are required for tracking and marketing cookies - we have none - so there is nothing to add.

How long a datalogger lasts

A TMS Standard datalogger has memory for 507 872 records; each day one record is used for a timestamp and the rest for readings. How long the memory lasts - and how long the battery keeps measuring - depends on the mode you set in Lolly:

Basic mode suits almost every deployment. It keeps the datalogger in its optimal range, and the memory lasts about 14 years - comfortably beyond the 10-plus years expected of the battery.

Measuring less often does not save the battery. The electronics draw a small amount of power even between readings, so Hourly mode does not make a device last meaningfully longer than Basic - it simply records fewer points and downloads faster. Choose it for those reasons, not to extend battery life. Faster modes (Meteo, Smart, Intensive, Experiment) do the opposite: they shorten battery life and fill the memory sooner.

A TMS Standard typically still has a large battery reserve after 15 years in Basic mode. A Point Dendrometer uses the same electronics and lasts as long, though its measurement probe is a mechanical part that does not. The TMS Extreme is the exception: its battery reserve is large enough that a slower mode genuinely extends the deployment, so it can keep logging well beyond a decade.

Expected lifespan in Basic mode: more than 10 years. That number comes from watching installed devices in the field, not from a spec sheet - and the field keeps running past it: many devices are beyond 14 years, and many are still in good condition at around 15. The cell itself is guaranteed by the battery manufacturer: its chemistry is rated for 10 years on every device and 20 years on the TMS Extreme and its variants, and in practice it usually lasts longer still. Conditions move the figure either way - warmth drains a battery faster, cold slows the discharge.

And the devices proving it are the older ones. The units that have been recording for twelve years and more are earlier generations. Hardware and firmware are improved continuously - usually small internal changes we never announce, which simply appear in the units we ship next. Measurements stay directly comparable across generations, so an old device and a new one belong in the same dataset without any conversion. Put a TMS from five years ago beside one made today, though, and the difference is immediate, with more of it inside than out.

Data cannot be deleted from a datalogger - by design. Erasing would expose the recorded data to human error, and reliable data matters more. In practice a device's end of life usually just means the memory is full, which is why Basic or Hourly makes the most of a single fill.

Experiment mode (a measurement every minute) is meant for short experiments only. It fills the whole memory in about 352 days, and because the device itself has thermal mass, sampling faster than every 15 minutes adds little real information. It is no longer offered in the Lolly Android app.

Data file format

Every download produces a CSV text file named after the serial number and download date, e.g. data_96626360_2026_07_04_7.csv - the serial number is engraved on the top of the device. Where the file lands depends on the platform: see the Software page. Each line is one record with nine semicolon-separated values:
